Sacramental Guidelines

For the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation

The Diocese of Bridgeport requires that children attend a formal religious education program for a minimum of consecutive two years before receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist and three years before receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation (see DOB Sacramental Guidelines 2010 for detailed information).

Children should demonstrate consistent attendance in an on-going program beginning in first grade and continuing beyond eighth grade.

Children must participate in Sacred Heart’s Sacrament Preparation Programs and other events (Masses, retreats, community service) scheduled for each sacrament in addition to their weekly religious education class.

  • Reconciliation and First Eucharist are traditionally received in the second grade. A child in grade 3 and up who has not attended a weekly religious education class is eligible to register for and attend the Reconciliation/First Eucharist Preparation Program in addition to his/her age appropriate class during the second year
